Friends and Food

Developed with funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Initiative

Local seniors volunteer and lead culinary and cultural activities with tenants at Clover Place (an 18-unit supportive housing project for individuals who have been chronically homeless). The program celebrates cultural diversity and promotes a relaxed environment for learning and sharing.

Pacifica Housing's Friends and Food program promotes social interaction between seniors and formally homeless/homeless-at-risk persons. It is currently being piloted (November 2010 - October 31, 201) at Clover Place and the first meal took place in January 2011. The project has celebrated tremendous success to date with higher than anticipated tenant participation and very positive feedback from the senior volunteers.

The program objectives are to:

  • Improve the lives of Clover Place tenants and encourage them to stay housed at Clover Place,
  • Engage seniors who may be at risk of social isolation
  • Promote social interaction between senior volunteers and Greater Victoria formally homeless / homeless at risk persons. Seniors will have an opportunity to get to know the individuals and the tenants will see that the community cares and values them as people.
